Summary Remittances have become an important source of financing for developing countries. The first objective of this thesis is to explain the individual motivations behind remittances. The second is to measure their impact on household welfare, as measured by the level of monetary and human poverty. We find that these flows reduce the number of poor and vulnerable households. They may also increase income inequality compared to the counterfactual situation of no migration. We find that remittances positively influence parents' decision to send their children to school, especially if they are male. The third objective of this thesis is to examine return migration. We will show the role of certain socio-demographic and economic factors in making the return decision.
